How to Remove Mold & Mildew from Boat Seats

You’ve stored your boat for the winter, careful to make sure it’s clean and ready for the Spring, only to revisit the boat a few months later and find that the seats and upholstery are covered in mold and mildew.

It’s the last thing a boat owner wants to see, but the good news is that it can be removed. Here are a few tips from Buxton Marine on how to remove mold and mildew from boat seats, should the issue ever arise in your boat:

Step 1: Have the Right Cleaner

Many boat owners will use a mild soap – like dish soap – first to see if it removes the mold and mildew. Sadly, it rarely does, so skip the effort and go with something stronger. Your next thought – go with bleach! While bleach will be effective in removing the mold and mildew, it is likely gong to wreck havoc on your beautiful seats, breaking down or discoloring the vinyl. Let’s not do that.

So what do you use?

Get a bottle of specially formulated mold and mildew remover that is made for boat interiors. This bottle of magic will get the job done and leave your boat intact! If you need help finding the right boat mildew remover, call us at Buxton Marine and our experts can help.

Step 2: Apply Vinyl Protectant Twice Yearly

Schedule to apply vinyl protectant with other seasonal boat maintenance. This will help prevent the growth of mold and mildew in the first place. Warm weather, humidity, and temperature swings are all known to promote mildew growth, and chances are if you have a boat in Texas, you’re not going to be able to avoid these factors!

Spring Boating Checklist: It’s Time to Start Thinking about Summer

The days are warming up here in North Texas, and those beautiful, sunny days may have you itching to get out on the water in your beautiful Nautique!

Now’s the time to begin the process of getting your boat ready for the lake life! Follow these tips on our Buxton Marine Spring Boating Checklist to ensure you’re ready for good times ahead as soon as the water warms!

  1. Get a Tune Up

Just like anything with a motor, boats need maintenance and TLC to continue running in their best condition. As part of your spring boating checklist, if you do nothing else, we encourage you to bring your boat into Buxton Marine in Lewisville, Texas for a service check. Our team of expertly trained technicians will give your boat a thorough once over and make sure everything mechanical is ready for the season ahead.

  1. Assess Life Jackets

Take an inventory of your life jackets and make sure you still have the right kinds to meet the needs of your passengers. Was there a new baby born this past year? Or a kid who has grown into a larger size life jacket? Make these life jacket adjustments before the season starts.

  1. Buy New Gear

Here’s the fun part! Wakeboards, tubes, and ropes – oh my! What do you need to have fun on the lake this summer? Visit the Buxton Marine Pro Shop to see the latest in gear to create a memorable summer for all.

  1. Develop Your Float Plan

A float plan tells someone who is not on the lake with you what your itinerary for the day is and when you plan to return to land. While you obviously can’t supply a float plan now for every day out on the lake, go ahead and fill in pertinent info that will never change to use as a template throughout the summer.

  1. Set Goals

Have each member of your family begin thinking now about what they’d like to accomplish on the lake this summer as part of your spring boating checklist. Does your son want to learn a new wakeboard trick? Are you interested in learning to wakesurf? Set goals now and then work toward those goals throughout the summer. It’s fun to see what you’ve achieved by summer’s end!

If you’re considering buying a new boat before the season begins, give us a call at Buxton Marine in Lewisville, Texas or Malakoff, Texas! Clients come to us from all over the country looking for the perfect ski boat, wakeboard boat, or wakesurf boat, and it’s because our honesty and integrity precedes us. Let us find you the perfect boat of your dreams – whether it’s a Nautique or something else!
