Boat Safety Tips: How to Stay Safe When Tubing

Tubing can be a lot of fun! It’s great for all ages and requires zero skill. Who wouldn’t love bumping and bouncing along with the waves? While tubing can be very fun, it can also be dangerous. Don’t let a great day on the lake end with an ER visit. Follow these boat safety tips on how to stay safe when tubing on the lake:

Wear A Life Vest

Okay – this is a no brainer, but bears repeating. Anytime a passenger gets on the tube, they should be a life jacket. You never know when they might get bounced off by an unsuspecting wave.

Communication is Key

Before a passenger gets on the tube, establish the ground rules. Make sure they know how to communicate with you whether they’d like to go faster, slower, or stop. As your passenger is riding, make sure you are constantly aware of what is going on.

Check the Gear

Before setting off for a fun day of tubing, check your ropes and knots to make sure everything is tied off properly. Does your tube have air? Are there any leaks? These are all important boat safety tips to be aware of.

Watch for Hazards

Part of tubing – and really any watersports – is an awareness of your surroundings. You wouldn’t want to sling your passengers into a stump or a buoy! Pay close attention to other boats that might be coming nearby or other hazards that could come into contact with your tube.

Be Safe in the Water

If your passenger falls off into the water, be sure they know how to stay safe in the water! Do not attempt to swim back to the boat. Instead, they should stay exactly where they are and watch carefully for other boaters. Teach passengers to wave their arms in the air to make other boats aware of their presence while you circle back. You might even consider adding a safety whistle to their life jacket.

Turn the Boat Off

As you approach the rider and they are ready to get back in the boat, cut the motor. This eliminates the risk of injury from the propeller on the backside of the boat.

Boat safety tips are important whether you are a seasoned boat owner or a novice! If you’re ready for good times ahead on the lake, call Buxton Marine in Lewisville, Texas to help you find the right watersports boat, wakeboard boat, or waterski boat that fits your needs. Boat Winterization: How to Get Your Boat Ready for the Off Season

Labor Day has come and gone, and with it, warm summer days on the lake. Sure, we live in Texas, so you’re probably got a few more in ya! But before long, the cooler weather means it’s time to winterize your boat and get it stored properly for the fall and winter months. Here are a few tips from Buxton Marine in Lewisville, Texas on how to get your boat ready for the off season:

Boat Winterization

Winterization is simply the process of getting your boat properly stored for the winter. First of all, decide where you are going to store it. An indoor facility is ideal, but if that doesn’t work, be sure to have your boat professionally shrink wrapped to protect it against the elements over the winter. Look at your boat’s manual or bring it in to Buxton Marine for Dallas boat winterization questions.

Inventory Safety Gear

The end of the season is a great time to inventory safety gear and make sure you still have everything you need on board. Is your fire extinguisher in good working order? Are there enough life jackets on board? First aid kit full? Replenish any supplies that are running low or have aged.

Detail the Boat

Before winterization, it’s a great time to deep clean your boat! Apply a wax and varnish to the exterior and carefully detail the entire interior of the boat, keeping everything good as new and preventing any mildew growth over the winter months.

Boat Tune-Up

Fall is a great time to get your boat’s engine detailed as well! Change the oil and fuel filter, check the spark plugs, check the belts, evaluate battery, etc. All of these simple steps lead to extending the life of your investment.

If you need help with boat winterization in Dallas, give us a call at Buxton Marine in Lewisville, Texas! There’s a reason customers come back time and time again to buy their boats from Buxton Marine. Our quality and customer service experience is second-to-none. Schedule your appointment today!

Beginner Waterskiing: How to Teach a Child to Water Ski

You’ve bought the boat, and now it’s time to get the whole family in on the action!

A great way to do this is by teaching your children how to water ski. Water skiing is fun, and a skill that can last a lifetime. Here are a few tips from Buxton Marine in Lewisville, Texas on how to teach a child to water ski for the first time:

  1. Get the Right Gear

Step 1 to teaching beginner waterskiing is to get the right gear for your child. For the rope, get a standard 75 ft. rope, not a shorter one. Many people think beginners should be on shorter ropes, but this is just not the case, because the shorter the rope – the closer you are to the boat and choppier water. For the skis, you can purchase a toddler ski trainer for younger kids (normally up to age 6) or junior skis with a removable crossbar that holds the skis together until your child gains enough strength to keep the skis together and straight themselves.

  1. Teach the Fundamentals

Practice makes perfect when it comes to learning to water ski, and getting the feel for getting up out the water can be tough. When teaching beginner waterskiing, teach your child to sit crouched in the water with their legs slightly bent as if they are sitting back in the chair in the water. They should hold the rope firmly and allow the boat to gradually pull them up out of the water. One of the most common beginner waterskiing mistakes is to attempt to stand up too fast! Encourage crouching until they are fully upright and out of the water.

  1. Know How to Fall

Falling is a natural part of beginner waterskiing, and it’s important to teach your child how to do this properly. When they begin to fall, they should immediately let go of the rope and fall to the side for the safest landing.

If you’re looking for beginner waterskiing gear and want to teach your child how to waterski, then come by our Buxton Marine Pro Shop at both our Lake Lewisville and Cedar Creek Lake locations. Our pro shop is well stocked with water skis, life jackets, wakeboards, surfboards, ropes, tubes, and more.

Nautique Maintenance: How to Keep Your Boat in Like New Condition

You finally took the plunge and purchased that gorgeous Nautique you’ve had your eye on for years. In order to keep it looking brand new season after season, Nautique maintenance is key. Here are a few tips on how to keep your boat in like new condition for years to come:

Check the Oil Regularly

One of the best ways to keep your boat running flawlessly is to stay on top of the oil and oil filter maintenance. Before you go out, simply check your oil to make sure it’s where it needs to be. This takes no time at all and can save you some serious headaches. It’s also wise to carry a quart of oil and a funnel on board just in case you need it. Make it a point to change the oil after 50 hours on the boat or every 4 months, whatever comes sooner.

Keep an Eye on the Transmission Fluid

The transmission on a wakeboard or ski boat gets a workout each time you’re on the lake, with constant stopping, starting, and maneuvering. Of course, a Nautique is made to handle this, but it doesn’t mean you can neglect maintenance. Plan to check the fluid every 2 weeks and change it out at least once per season.

Clean After Each Use

The last thing you want to do after a day on the lake is clean the boat, but even just a quick wipe down and rinse can do wonders for keeping your boat in like new condition. Plus – you might even notice possible maintenance issues before they become problems.

Purchasing a Wakesurf Board: Skim vs. Surf Style

If you’ve spent any time on the water, then you’ve noticed the latest rage in watersports: wakesurfing.

It’s been around for awhile, but experienced boaters and new boaters alike are getting into the sport because of it’s accessibility for all ages and how fun it is to wakesurf behind one of our Nautique boats. Buxton Marine in Lewisville, Texas has has a Dallas pro shop full of the top wakesurf boards and gear. As you begin looking, you may wonder – do I need a skim board or a surf board? The experts at Buxton Marine are here to offer advice on when to use both:

Skim Boards

If you’re new to wakesurfing, then starting with a skim board is a good idea! These boards are mostly flat, molded boards, making them more durable and great for beginners. They handle 180s and 360s with ease, and many agree they are less likely to nose dive or roll in the water unexpectedly. Plus – if you’re already a wakeboarder, skim boards normally stow really well in a wakeboard rack with very little issues. However, if you are interested in learning to free ride, you may want to look at regular surf style boards, as these skim boards are difficult to free ride on.

Surf Boards

These traditional wakesurf boards mimic traditional surfboards you’d find at the coast – and they handle more like traditional boards too. If you purchase a wakesurf board from Buxton Marine expect the board to handle traditional surfing curves and cutbacks with ease, and freeriding is much easier with surf boards than with skim boards. The downside is that if you are new to the sport and not used to surfing under traditional conditions, these boards may be trickier to maneuver.

Still have questions? Visit us at one of our Buxton Marine Pro Shops, conveniently located in Lewisvile, Texas or at Long Cove Marina in Malakoff, Texas. Our expertly trained sales staff will be happy to discuss our inventory of boards and what wakesurf board is right for you!

3 Steps Toward Better Boat Maintenance

Whether you use your boat for skiing, wakeboarding, wake surfing, or other watersports, one thing is certain: boat maintenance is critical. Failing to maintain your boat properly can take years off the life of your boat and devalue a major asset. Here are 3 boat maintenance tips from Buxton Marine in Lewisville, Texas that you can do routinely to keep your boat in great condition for years to come:

  1. Clean it After Each Use

We know…you’ve had a long day on the lake and the last thing you want to do is wipe down your boat. Don’t make excuses; just do it! Begin by hosing it down, then grab a long bristled boat brush and some quality boat wash to clean it thoroughly. This removes any debris from the lake or unwanted creatures, like zebra mussels, that can wreck havoc on ecosystems and corrode your boat.

  1. Evaluate the Propeller

Make it a habit of checking out the propeller before each and every boat outing. Visually inspect it for knicks, dings, or cracks, then several times a season, go ahead and remove the propeller completely to make sure there isn’t any fishing line that has been wrapped up and stuck in the propeller shaft. Any knick or crack in the propeller can wreck havoc on performance, so be sure to take your boat in to be serviced by the best boat service in Lewisville, Buxton Marine.

  1. Don’t Forget the Oil Change

A good rule of thumb in boat maintenance is to change your boat’s oil every 100 hours – or at least once every Spring before the boating season begins. Simply bring your boat into Buxton Marine Lewisville and we are happy to get that done for you with the best boat service in Lewisville, Texas.

As always, if you have any boat maintenance questions, give us a call at Buxton Marine in Lewisville, Texas or Long Cove Marina in Malakoff, Texas!

How to Protect Your Boat from Zebra Mussels in Texas

Zebra mussels – a small muscle that is believed to have arrived in Texas from Asia in the 1980s – have quickly become an epidemic in Texas lakes.

These small creatures attach themselves to boats and trailers that are in an invested lake, and then hitch a ride to new locations to spread. One tiny mussel has the capability to produce up to 1 million larvae! As a foreign creature to Texas, they are destructive to the natural ecosystem, killing off aquatic life, wrecking havoc on our water supply, and even damaging your boat and trailer! Here a few ways Buxton Marine Lewisville recommends you can protect your boat and our Texas lakes from zebra mussels:

  1. Clean Everything

It may surprise you to know that if there is water trapped somewhere in your boat, the zebra mussels can live for days in it! This is why it’s imperative that everything gets cleaned after each and every trip to the lake: boat, gear, trailer, etc.

  1. Drain Everything

In addition to cleaning the boat thoroughly, it’s important that each place water is stored is properly drained. This includes the bait buckets, live wells, motor, and bilge. Be sure to drain everything before you ever leave the lake you are in as it’s Texas law.

  1. Dry Everything

It is recommended that your boat spend a week out of the water between lakes to ensure everything is fully dried out and no signs of zebra mussel life can remain active. Sometimes it’s just not possible to take that much time out of the water, in which case, use a pressure wash and hot, soapy water to get a thorough cleaning then dry to the best of your ability.

If you suspect zebra mussels have invested your boat or trailer and you don’t think you have removed them all, call Buxton Marine Lewisville and ask us about a high powered, high temperature pressure wash to completely cleanse your boat of zebra mussels and protect from future damage to your boat – and our Texas lakes. Lake Lewisville is known to have an epidemic of zebra mussels, so it’s imperative that you clean each and every time you visit the lake.
