How to Pick the Best Wakeboard

There are few things in life that are truly “one size fits all,” and wakeboards certainly aren’t one of those things. A common misconception is that you can just hop on a buddy’s board and start shredding. Well that just isn’t the case! If you want to learn how to wakeboard, then the right wakeboard is essential. Here are several tips on choosing the best wakeboard:

  1. Bindings are Important

We’ve seen too many people come in looking at wakeboards, and they completely ignore the bindings in their purchase decision. This is a huge mistake! Bindings are created for comfort and protection against injury, making them a crucial part of the wakeboarding experience. Look for bindings that are snug, but comfortable.

  1. Consider the Rocker

A wakeboard’s “rocker” is how much bend the board has, and it is either consider “continuous” or “3-stage.” If you’re just beginning the sport of wakeboarding, then a continuous rocker will be best for you, providing smooth transitions on the water. On the other hand, if you’re looking to get more aggressive with your jumps, then a 3-stage rocker will give you more lift and pop.

  1. Get the Right Size

Do not try to use a board that is the wrong size for your height/weight! A board that is too small will fly underneath you, creating a lack of control; a board that is too big will feel clunky and difficult to maneuver. Check with your pro shop on the appropriate size for your height/weight.

  1. Fiberglass vs. Wood

Fiberglass and wood are the two most popular core elements of a wakeboard, and each has its perks. A fiberglass board – the most popular option – is durable and lighter, while a wood core board will give the rider additional pop off the wake for more advanced tricks.

  1. Always Try it First

Check with your local pro shop – like Buxton Marine in Lewisville, Texas – to see if you can borrow or rent gear before buying it. This helps get a feel for the best wakeboard for you and your skill level, without committing to something you don’t love.

Selling Your Boat? How to Make the Most Money on the Sale

Have your eye on a brand new boat for the 2019 boating season? Well let’s get your boat ready to sell then! There are certain things you can do to make the most money on the sale of a boat, and Buxton Marine is here with tips on selling your boat the right way:

  1. Deep Cleaning is a Must

Think about it from a buyer’s perspective. If they open compartments (and they will) that have standing water, mold, dirt, mildew, etc., then they’re going to question how well the boat has been maintained. Bring the boat into Buxton Marine for a deep clean and maintenance to get everything in like-new condition before selling your boat.

  1. Record all Maintenance

Speaking of maintenance, now is the time to dig up all of your maintenance records and have them neatly in a file for the prospective buyer. Detailed logs of maintenance shows that you are a boat owner who cares about impeccable quality. Even if you have maintained your boat regularly, it’s a good idea to go ahead and get it serviced with our Buxton Marine service department to ensure all parts are in excellent working order.

  1. Boat Staging

Staging isn’t just for houses – it’s for boats too! If you’re selling a boat, you’ll want to show it in the best light possible in order to get top dollar. While your deep cleaning the boat, take all the contents out and then only put things back in that you’ll sell with the boat. Organize and stage those items so that everything looks pristine. Prospective buyers will notice.

  1. Trailer Condition Matters Too!

Don’t forget about the trailer! If your trailer is looking a little worn, it’s time to repaint, repair chipped paint, remove rust, get new tires, etc. to make that trailer shine as well.

After you’ve sold your current boat, visit us at Buxton Marine in Lewisville, Texas and let us show you the latest 2019 Nautique models, along with gorgeous pre-owned models from Malibu, Mastercraft, Supre, Tige, and more. There’s a reason our customers come back again and again to Buxton Marine of Lewisville!

Before buying a boat from Buxton Marine, consider these costs of boat ownership:

  1. Upfront Costs

This is the price tag on the boat. Remember that you’ll pay for the boat, plus related interest and financing costs if you finance the boat. Use our handy boat payment calculatoron our website to determine how much boat you can afford.

Now that you’ve got the boat, you’ve got to insure it too! Shop around for quotes to get the best deal that serves your needs and boat purchase best.

Boat Safety Tips: How to Stay Safe When Tubing

Tubing can be a lot of fun! It’s great for all ages and requires zero skill. Who wouldn’t love bumping and bouncing along with the waves? While tubing can be very fun, it can also be dangerous. Don’t let a great day on the lake end with an ER visit. Follow these boat safety tips on how to stay safe when tubing on the lake:

Wear A Life Vest

Okay – this is a no brainer, but bears repeating. Anytime a passenger gets on the tube, they should be a life jacket. You never know when they might get bounced off by an unsuspecting wave.

Communication is Key

Before a passenger gets on the tube, establish the ground rules. Make sure they know how to communicate with you whether they’d like to go faster, slower, or stop. As your passenger is riding, make sure you are constantly aware of what is going on.

Check the Gear

Before setting off for a fun day of tubing, check your ropes and knots to make sure everything is tied off properly. Does your tube have air? Are there any leaks? These are all important boat safety tips to be aware of.

Watch for Hazards

Part of tubing – and really any watersports – is an awareness of your surroundings. You wouldn’t want to sling your passengers into a stump or a buoy! Pay close attention to other boats that might be coming nearby or other hazards that could come into contact with your tube.

Be Safe in the Water

If your passenger falls off into the water, be sure they know how to stay safe in the water! Do not attempt to swim back to the boat. Instead, they should stay exactly where they are and watch carefully for other boaters. Teach passengers to wave their arms in the air to make other boats aware of their presence while you circle back. You might even consider adding a safety whistle to their life jacket.

Turn the Boat Off

As you approach the rider and they are ready to get back in the boat, cut the motor. This eliminates the risk of injury from the propeller on the backside of the boat.

Boat safety tips are important whether you are a seasoned boat owner or a novice! If you’re ready for good times ahead on the lake, call Buxton Marine in Lewisville, Texas to help you find the right watersports boat, wakeboard boat, or waterski boat that fits your needs. As the #1 Nautique dealer in the country – we know boats!

Boat Winterization: How to Get Your Boat Ready for the Off Season

Labor Day has come and gone, and with it, warm summer days on the lake. Sure, we live in Texas, so you’re probably got a few more in ya! But before long, the cooler weather means it’s time to winterize your boat and get it stored properly for the fall and winter months. Here are a few tips from Buxton Marine in Lewisville, Texas on how to get your boat ready for the off season:

Boat Winterization

Winterization is simply the process of getting your boat properly stored for the winter. First of all, decide where you are going to store it. An indoor facility is ideal, but if that doesn’t work, be sure to have your boat professionally shrink wrapped to protect it against the elements over the winter. Look at your boat’s manual or bring it in to Buxton Marine for Dallas boat winterization questions.

Inventory Safety Gear

The end of the season is a great time to inventory safety gear and make sure you still have everything you need on board. Is your fire extinguisher in good working order? Are there enough life jackets on board? First aid kit full? Replenish any supplies that are running low or have aged.

Detail the Boat

Before winterization, it’s a great time to deep clean your boat! Apply a wax and varnish to the exterior and carefully detail the entire interior of the boat, keeping everything good as new and preventing any mildew growth over the winter months.

Boat Tune-Up

Fall is a great time to get your boat’s engine detailed as well! Change the oil and fuel filter, check the spark plugs, check the belts, evaluate battery, etc. All of these simple steps lead to extending the life of your investment.

If you need help with boat winterization in Dallas, give us a call at Buxton Marine in Lewisville, Texas! There’s a reason customers come back time and time again to buy their boats from Buxton Marine. Our quality and customer service experience is second-to-none. Schedule your appointment today!

Beginner Waterskiing: How to Teach a Child to Water Ski

You’ve bought the boat, and now it’s time to get the whole family in on the action!

A great way to do this is by teaching your children how to water ski. Water skiing is fun, and a skill that can last a lifetime. Here are a few tips from Buxton Marine in Lewisville, Texas on how to teach a child to water ski for the first time:

  1. Get the Right Gear

Step 1 to teaching beginner waterskiing is to get the right gear for your child. For the rope, get a standard 75 ft. rope, not a shorter one. Many people think beginners should be on shorter ropes, but this is just not the case, because the shorter the rope – the closer you are to the boat and choppier water. For the skis, you can purchase a toddler ski trainer for younger kids (normally up to age 6) or junior skis with a removable crossbar that holds the skis together until your child gains enough strength to keep the skis together and straight themselves.

  1. Teach the Fundamentals

Practice makes perfect when it comes to learning to water ski, and getting the feel for getting up out the water can be tough. When teaching beginner waterskiing, teach your child to sit crouched in the water with their legs slightly bent as if they are sitting back in the chair in the water. They should hold the rope firmly and allow the boat to gradually pull them up out of the water. One of the most common beginner waterskiing mistakes is to attempt to stand up too fast! Encourage crouching until they are fully upright and out of the water.

  1. Know How to Fall

Falling is a natural part of beginner waterskiing, and it’s important to teach your child how to do this properly. When they begin to fall, they should immediately let go of the rope and fall to the side for the safest landing.

If you’re looking for beginner waterskiing gear and want to teach your child how to waterski, then come by our Buxton Marine Pro Shop at both our Lake Lewisville and Cedar Creek Lake locations. Our pro shop is well stocked with water skis, life jackets, wakeboards, surfboards, ropes, tubes, and more.

Nautique Maintenance: How to Keep Your Boat in Like New Condition

You finally took the plunge and purchased that gorgeous Nautique you’ve had your eye on for years. In order to keep it looking brand new season after season, Nautique maintenance is key. Here are a few tips on how to keep your boat in like new condition for years to come:

Check the Oil Regularly

One of the best ways to keep your boat running flawlessly is to stay on top of the oil and oil filter maintenance. Before you go out, simply check your oil to make sure it’s where it needs to be. This takes no time at all and can save you some serious headaches. It’s also wise to carry a quart of oil and a funnel on board just in case you need it. Make it a point to change the oil after 50 hours on the boat or every 4 months, whatever comes sooner.

Keep an Eye on the Transmission Fluid

The transmission on a wakeboard or ski boat gets a workout each time you’re on the lake, with constant stopping, starting, and maneuvering. Of course, a Nautique is made to handle this, but it doesn’t mean you can neglect maintenance. Plan to check the fluid every 2 weeks and change it out at least once per season.

Clean After Each Use

The last thing you want to do after a day on the lake is clean the boat, but even just a quick wipe down and rinse can do wonders for keeping your boat in like new condition. Plus – you might even notice possible maintenance issues before they become problems.
