Buxton Marine Lewisville Celebrates National Safe Boating Week!

At the premier Lewisville boat dealer, Buxton Marine, safety is one of our top concerns. Not only do we want you to have fun on the lake, but we want everyone to arrive home safely.

National Safe Boating Week is May 20-26, 2017, and in honor of Safe Boating Week, Buxton Marine wants to review a few important safety tips:

  1. Life Jackets are a Must

It’s not enough to have the life jackets on board with you; they must be accessible! Better yet – keep it on you at all times! A study by the US Coast Guard shows that of the drownings that occurred in 2015, 85% could have been preventable if the person had been wearing a life jacket. Of course, children must wear a life jacket at all times.

  1. Never Drink and Drive

This is a no brainer, but with Memorial Day and National Safe Boating Week coming up, Buxton Marine reminds you it’s never okay to drink and operate a motor vehicle – on land or water.

  1. Take a Boater’s Safety Course

New to boating? Taking a boat safety course is always a good first step when getting started. Furthermore, anyone born on or after Sept. 1, 1993 is required to take a course if operating a boat with a 15p horsepower or more.

  1. Use an Ignition Safety Switch

An ignition safety switch a device that allows the boat to shut off, should the driver be thrown from the boat or unable to operate the boat any longer. The US Coast Guard reports that using an ignition safety switch properly could reduce boat-related deaths by 89%!

Have a safe and fun Memorial Day Weekend and help Buxton Marine spread the word on National Safe Boating Week! And should you need a new boat to get you started, call the number one boat dealer in Lewisville, Texas – Buxton Marine!

Tips & Tricks: Teach Your Child to Wakeboard in 4 Easy Steps

Trying to teach your child to wakeboard can be a difficult and frustrating process. But like anything, practice makes perfect, and Buxton Marine – the best boat dealer in Lewisville, Texas – is here with some tips on how to make the process a little simpler with these 4 steps:

Step 1: Walk on the Moon

One of the first things children must understand when being introduced to watersports is to stay calm and relaxed through the whole process. Tell your child he or she is an astronaut and they are trying to gently glide through space or walk on the moon.

Step 2: Curl Up in a Ball

When you teach your child to wakeboard, have them start by pretending he or she is a ball. Keep elbows and knees in, and then have the board float out in front of them. Don’t let them drag limbs in the water loosely.

Step 3: Don’t Stand Up Until Shorts are out of the Water

Kids have a tendency to want to stand up very quickly once the boat begins to pull. Teach them to fight that urge, staying seated as long as possible or until their shorts – or entire legs – are out of the water. Then slowly rise into a standing position.

Step 4: Smash a Bug

Once standing, most children are able to naturally rotate the board with the nose pointing toward the boat. If this doesn’t happen naturally, tell your child to bear weight on their back heel, acting as though they are gently – but forcefully – smashing a bug with it. This will teach your child to wakeboard and rotate it appropriately.

Want more tips on how to teach your child to wakeboard? Buxton Marine – the #1 Nautique dealer in Texas – is happy to share a few more of our favorite tips and tricks. We are your one-stop-shop for all of your boating, wakeboarding, wakesurfing, and water skiing needs.

Boating with Kids: Safety Tips from Buxton Marine Lewisville

Enjoying the water with your family and boating with kids can be one of the most rewarding family activities and source of many memories that will be cherished for years to come. Whether you have a ski boat, wakeboard boat, fishing boat, or something in between, it’s important to instill boating safety tips into your kids. Here are 4 top safety tips for boating with kids from Buxton Marine – your top Lewisville boat dealer:

  1. Buy the Right Life Jacket

Life jackets can be uncomfortable for children, but it’s essential that they wear them at all times! Make sure your child’s life jacket fits well, preferably with a crotch strap, a handle in the back to grab them if necessary, and a collar that will flip the child over face up in the water. Bright colors are also good for life jackets, as they increase visibility.

  1. Add a Whistle to the Child’s Life Jacket

A safety whistle can be an excellent tool if a child is sitting in the water unattended and waiting for the boat to come pick them up again. Consider attaching a safety whistle to each child’s life vest and teaching them when and how to use this handy device!

  1. Create Refuge from the Sun

When boating with kids, it’s easy to forget how draining the sun can be! Create spaces in your boat that a child can take a nap or seek refuge from the sun in general. Consider purchasing a boat with a Bimini top or other removable top that can shield the sunrays if need be.

  1. Set a Good Example

Children often learn by example. Practice safe boating habits and train your children in them as they ride on the boat. No dangling over the side, being aware of the propeller, asking before jumping in, etc. are all safe boating rules that can be taught by example.

Ready to begin boating with kids in Lewisville, Texas? Head to Buxton Marine today and let us show you the boat of your dreams! Good times ahead!

With Spring Break in full force, we know the summer boating season is just around the corner! And in Texas, the water warms up quickly, so watersports can be enjoyed as early as May.

So the question is…. Is your boat ready?

If the answer is no, do not worry! Buxton Marine – the number one boat dealer in Lewisville, Texas – is here to help! Follow these simple tips for getting a jump start on prepping your boat for Spring with our Spring Boating Checklist:

  1. Deep Clean

After sitting unused for a season, chances are, your ski boat, wakeboard boat, or wakesurf boat can use a good scrub! To begin you spring boating checklist, use a mild detergent and wipe down the hull, deck, and topsides of the boat. Then move on to the windows, bimini, hatches, any teak wood interiors, etc., using the appropriate cleaning supplies for the materials. Finish up with a good coat of wax and polish on all metal surfaces.

  1. Check Supplies

First and foremost – is your registration current and onboard? If not, get that renewed or replaced in the glove box as part of your spring boating checklist. Then make sure all of the equipment is still current. Your boat should have enough life jackets for the number of passengers (replace any that are worn out from last season!), make sure fire extinguishers are still charged, and restock first aid supplies. You may also want to make sure you have a storage spot for any new gear or toys you’ve purchased in the off season.

What Other Boat Expenses Should a Boat Owner Expect? – Buxton Marine

The weather is warming up in North Texas, and we’ve got our eye on the lake.

If you’re looking to take the plunge into boat ownership, it’s important to consider that there are more boat expenses involved than just the cost of your boat. Buxton Marine recommends that you evaluate your budget and make sure you have room to cover all of the costs below, before purchasing a new or pre-owned boat:

  • Insurance: It seems like every major purchase comes with insurance costs. You’ll want to make sure you insure your boat to protect your investment, and it will be absolutely required if you are financing it. Chances are, your Lewisville boat dealer can provide some insight into who will have the best rates in addition to other boat expenses in this realm.
  • Routine Maintenance & Service: In order to ensure your boat stays in tip-top condition, you’ll want to abide by the manufacturer’s recommended maintenance schedule. This generally means a 10-20 hour inspection, and then maintenance every 50-100 hours of boat time.

  • Gas: This boat expense is expected, but gasoline prices can add up, as you spend more time on the lake. Keep in mind that you’ll need to budget for gas for both your boat and your tow vehicle. Hopefully, you have kind friends who will pitch in to help!
  • Boat Storage: Maybe you are lucky enough to have a large garage or some other boat storage at your home. But for most Texas boat owners, boat storage at home is not an option, so you’ll need to budget in storage at a local marina or warehouse to cover boat expenses.
  • Registration: Don’t forget that you’ll need to pay annual registration fees for your boat and trailer!
  • Launch Fees: Many lakes require launch fees before entering the water. Keep this in mind so there are no surprises upon arrival.
  • Boat Upgrades: Already eyeing an upgraded sound system or other accessories? These features add up, so you’d be wise to add these all up front and wrap them into your cost or add gradually along the way.

Once you feel that you are ready to take the plunge into boat ownership, come and see us at Buxton Marine in Lewisville! Even if you’re still in the dream phase, we’d still love to visit with you! Our lot is full of beautiful boats from Nautique, Correct Craft, MasterCraft, and more. We are proud to be the best boat dealer in Lewisville, Texas!
